The Bay St. Louis Little Theatre will open its latest production “Summer and Smoke” by Tennessee Williams as part of its Tennessee Williams Tribute in March. This play is considered one of the author’s most highly regarded works. Because the Little Theatre building was the set of the Hollywood movie “This Property is Condemned” which is based on a one-act play by Tennessee Williams, the Little Theatre honors its connection with Tennessee Williams with an annual tribute occurring near his birthday, March 26th. The Tribute includes performing a play written by the playwright, a “Stella Yelling Contest”, and the Stella Blues and B-B-Q Festival. The show will open on Friday, March 20th. The “Stella Yelling Contest” will take place under the balcony of the Little Theatre on April 11th at 2pm.
The play is set in the small town of Glorious Hill, Mississippi, in the early 1900’s. “Summer and Smoke” explores the relationship between a puritanical spinster, Alma Winemiller, and her charismatic neighbor, John Buchanan, Jr., for whom she has harbored a life-long infatuation. In her search for spiritual love, Alma finds herself pitted against John’s sensuous, reckless nature. They engage in an emotional battle of wills and their struggle between lust and love leads to profound changes in both their lives. Tennessee Williams once said, “ The character I like most is Miss Alma. She really had the greatest struggle. Alma went through the same thing I went through.” The play is trademark Tennessee Williams, full of lyrical language, smoldering undercurrents, and a small southern town filled with memorable characters.
The show is directed by Mari Kenney and produced by Cheryl Grace. The cast includes Anne Martolinich Jones, Jason Piglia, Jim Lindsay, Elizabeth Devlin, Chase Anderson, Rosa Obregon Palacios, Sofia Aderer, Penne Rappold, Billy Rappold, Clayton Pennylegion, Melanie Buford, and Michael Rucker. Stage crew and set design/construction include Laurie Spaschak, Dean Noel, Larry Clark, and Carol Lindsay.
The show opens on Friday, March 2o, 2015. The show dates and times are March 20, 21, 27, 28 at 8pm and March 22 and 29 at 2pm. Doors open one hour before the show and seating starts 30 minutes before each show.
